My name is Jim Dillon and I suffered a Total Knee Replacement by Dr. C. Lindsay in September 2012. Since then I have endured cruel, crippling pain causing me to retire early from active service as a Fire Captain with Toronto Fire. Two days after being released from hospital post surgery, the pain in my right knee was so profound that I returned to Southlake Hospital by ambulance in need of some relief only to be told by Dr. Lindsay " I'm not impressed! I'm not impressed!", and that he considered me a 'Drug Addict' because I was asking for pain relief. For the next year my knee continued to give me excruciating pain and was so swollen it looked like I had a football inside my knee. After unsuccessfully trying to get help from him numerous times, in the late fall 2013 I sought advice from two other surgeons, both of whom confirmed that my knee was loose and would need to be redone. By the beginning of December 2013 my knee had fallen apart so much that my knee cap was on the right side of my knee and the liner which replaces the meniscus was bulging out the other and I was confined to a wheelchair because I couldn't put any weight on my leg. Dr. Lindsay continued to tell me that there was no problem. After an escalation through Southlake's Patient Advocate and Chief of Staff, I was referred to Dr. Backstein at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and had the top prosthesis (that was completely loose) replaced in January 2014. This was much better but I was still experiencing pain because of continuing side to side movement. In January 2016 Dr. Backstein replaced the liner between the two prosthesis with a thicker one to attempt to stabilize the aforementioned sideways movement. This worked very well for about 4 months but then the sideways instability slowly started to manifest itself again causing significant pain. Dr. Backstein now believes that the ligaments running along the inside and outside of the knee (that should prevent sideways movement) have not recovered. I am now returning to have Dr. Backstein replace the lower prosthesis with one that has a pin or with a hinge in order to stabilize the knee. My opinion is that Dr. Lindsay was very 'rough' when performing the original surgery causing so much trauma to my tissues that it caused my knee to be swollen to the size of a football for 15 months, and over-extending the ligaments to the point that they were unable to recover. It has now taken 3 additional surgeries to fix the mess Dr. Lindsay made. If you are contemplating knee surgery in the future I sincerely recommend looking elsewhere. I recently talked to someone who has a friend who had both knees done by Dr. Lindsay and this person says that the pain in both of his knees is worse than it was pre-surgery ... and Dr. Lindsay is telling him the same thing - that nothing is wrong. Clearly Dr. Lindsay does not know how to do knees properly, and when things go wrong he is so arrogant he refuses to believe it and follow up with help when his patients have problems.
